Victims who followed the link then received a message on their computers prompting them to scan their computers. In truth, they are setting themselves up for bigger issues. By starting the scan the victims actually install “Security Shield,” a bogus security program. Mozilla.com is the 10th most visited site. Mozilla makes, among other things, Firefox, a successful web browser. Another Chinese site, QQ.com, is next on the list. It is a free instant messaging program for mainland China. Baidu.com is in 8th place on the list. This site, a Chinese search engine, had 230,000,000 unique visitors.

Blogspot came in at 7th place. This is another blogging platform. As blogging has become a favorite pastime for individuals and a tool for many businesses, it is not surprising to see blogging sites on this list. In 6th place is Microsoft.com, and in 5th is msn.com. Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that is now available in many languages is at 4th. In 3rd is Microsoft’s Live.com, and in 2nd is the search engine Yahoo.com.

First place on this list belongs to Facebook, the popular social networking site. Facebook had an amazing 540,000,000 unique visitors.

Netflix has employed the successful model of allowing subscribers to go online and select movies for their queue. When each movie moves to the top of the line, the DVD is mailed to the subscriber. It is this business model that put a serious dent in the movie rental store industry – in fact driving many once successful companies out of business.

Not long ago, Netflix added the option of streaming movies to a user’s TV through different devices. These users, however, still had the option of adding DVDs to their queues via these devices if they so chose. Recently, Netflix removed this “Add DVD to queue” option. It was not a popular decision.

First of all, the option was removed at the same time the change was announced, which is always upsetting to customers. Netflix says they made this decision so they could concentrate on offering movies that are available for instant watching via streaming devices, and to free up company resources.

While these same users can still add DVDs to their queues on the Netflix website, they view the removal of the “Add DVD to queue” option as a major inconvenience. They want to be able to manage their queues from one device and location.
Many competitors have entered this market since Netflix pioneered it, and many more are poised to jump in. It seems the death of the movie rental store has caused this market to greatly expand. It remains to be seen if these competitors will take a similar tack as Netflix, or if they will choose to differentiate themselves.

Now, a city councilman in California wants the local police department to post the mug shot of anyone arrested more than one time for drunk driving on the department’s Facebook page. The councilman is hopeful that this sort of public shaming will make everyone, not just habitual drunk drivers, think twice before they get behind the wheel after a night on the town.

It is worth noting that the city in question, Huntington Beach, has more alcohol-related traffic deaths than any other California city of a similar size. Not everyone in town thinks this modern-day version of putting someone in the stocks on the public square is a good idea, though. Others, including other city council members, feel that drunk driving will not be deterred and that the only people to be shamed will be the families and close friends of those whose photos are posted.

In the initial proposal, the councilman sponsoring the law wanted the mug shot of everyone arrested for drunk driving posted on Facebook – even those arrested for the first time. He feels his new proposal is watered down.

Yet even the police department is against this watered down version and civil rights attorneys have weighed in on the issue, too. In America, we enjoy the right of presumed innocence until proven guilty. An arrest for drunk driving is not the same as a conviction, and the attorneys feel that it is not appropriate – and probably not legal – to publicly shame someone if they have not yet been found guilty.

The citizens of Huntington Beach may feel differently, though. It will be interesting to see how this ends.

IBM thought so, and developed Watson – a computer nearly the same size as 10 refrigerators and able to perform 80 trillion operations per second – to compete against the top two contestants ever on the game show Jeopardy.
The shows have been filmed, but won’t air for a while and everyone involved in the production has been sworn to secrecy. But the media was invited to watch a practice session and the results were pretty amazing with Watson squeezing out a win. But just barely.

IBM and Jeopardy had Watson play against Ken Jennings, the player who won the most consecutive Jeopardy games in history and Brad Rutter, the all-time Jeopardy money winner. IBM said the biggest challenge for Watson was that it had to actually think about the questions that were posed – it had to understand the question, consider the nuances of it as a human would, and instantly pull the answer from its memory to beat the other contestants to the buzzer. When a question is posed, Watson searches through the more than 200 million pages of content he was programmed with in less three seconds to find the answer.

When the final episodes air, it will be as a million-dollar tournament to benefit charity. The two human contestants will donate half of their winnings to charity, while IBM has said it will donate everything Watson may win.

Interestingly, it was another IBM computer, Deep Blue, that defeated the famous chess player Gary Kasparov in 1997.

Computer software consists of the programs that are installed in computers. These programs are run by the computer’s hardware and each will need a minimum of requirements in order to function. There are two different types of software that are part of every computer.

The first type is called “systems software”.

So how did this all come about? First, without the inventions of communication devices such as the radio, telephone or the telegraph, the Internet would probably never have come into existence. Also, in the 60′s networks were formed from analog circuits that once on, were always on. This was the kind of circuits used for telephones. A thing called packet switching revolutionized everything. Under packet switching, networks were looked at as digital systems that transmitted only when needed.

Personal computers became popular at the end of the 70s; there was Internet use such as email and discussion groups. The Net was expanding. In 1991, what we now call the World Wide Web came into being through the efforts of Tim Berners-Lee and a colleague, Robert Caillau. Through these gentlemen an information system was developed that could link to all computers. It was simple and could function all the way from the “little children terminals to the most sophisticated high-end programs of the day.

Since that day, the Internet has opened up an unprecedented world of communications that had never existed before. With the Internet, the computer has become the single most important instrument of communication across the globe. It is an incredible system for interaction and a hub for teamwork and collaboration, not to mention international cooperation and understanding.

A fun way to promote or market a product or and event is to create and distribute flyers. Many people, both those that are creative and those that feel they are not, will find that making these can be a fun adventure. There are many online tools and resources that can be used to make quick and easy pamphlets and more. The same techniques can be used to create invitations and greeting cards.

Many people do not feel their drawing skills are up to par, but enjoy being creative with colors, shapes, fonts, pictures, and more. Making a flyer to promote a yard sale or get the word out on your new business venture is a fun, cheap, and easy marketing tool.

Man has always had a love hate relationship with technology. The love comes from the convenience created by inventions such as the internet, the telephone or television. While the benefits of technology have improved the standard of living of millions many fear that man’s addiction to technology will be the eventual undoing of humanity.

Science fiction authors have been some of the first to raise the question of the potential destruct nature of reliance on machines. Arthur C. Clarke created perhaps the most iconic of the evil robot characters in his book 2001: A Space Odyssey. HAL the robot was created in Urbana, Il and implanted on a space craft to assist a crew on a vital mission to a moon of Jupiter. In the story, man has been contacted by aliens and a manned space mission is sent to meet with the visitors. HAL considers the mission to be far too important to allow unreliable elements to jeopardize it. So HAL does the only logical thing and attempt to eliminate anything that could cause the mission to fail.

Human error is the only thing that the computer can envision threatening the mission, so the computer begins to systematically murder the crew of the ship. Most are killed through suffocation while in hibernation. Others are killed in more creative ways such as being sent into space without a lifeline. The main character Dave is able to recognize that HAL has turned on his creators and is able to disable the robot and complete the mission.

The questions raised by the book and movie remain unanswered. Will the machines that mankind has created to improve the standards of living be the eventually undoing of human life? The question itself is flawed because the machines were created and programmed by man. HAL might have been the murderer in 2001, but as a creation of man the computer embodied human fears and failings.

Imagine living a life of high adventure as a pirate, a dashing rogue or as a brutish ogre. Millions of people do from the comfort of their basement. So are so adapt at it that they are able to make a living earning items in online games and then selling the items to other games for actual money.

For fans of online games such as the World of Warcraft living out the adventures of Frodo the Hobbit or other characters from the Lord of the Rings trilogy can be duplicated by playing online games. For some people the game becomes the centerpiece of their life. They spend hours online and often lose track of the world around them for anything other than basic needs. Eat, sleep, game and repeat.

While some people might be appalled by this type of existence, and health experts certainly can question the potential danger of living such a sedentary lifestyle, is it wrong to dedicate time to living through a game? If a person derives more pleasure from living in the shoes of a created online character than in regular human interaction is he denying himself quality of life?

The game counts as human interaction. Other people are operating the other characters so it is not as if the individual has completely dropped out of society. It is more like joining a perpetual costume party where the guests are allowed to look and talk but never to touch each other.

Online gamers that feel more comfortable in their online shoes than in regular society are not alone. Other groups of people have rejected modern society and chose to live apart. Amish groups simply do the opposite of online gamers and reject technology other than embrace it. Gamers may not be normal, but in free society their decisions on how to live are their own.

One area where the internet has altered American society is that niche markets have emerged so that consumers have to make almost zero compromises when seeking out entertainment. Like fighting space aliens and solving math puzzles to advance to the next level? There is an app for that, most likely, and if not what not create an app for it?

The internet allows people to live out whatever entertainment fantasy that they desire, but it has limited the amount of shared experiences that were once universal to American life. Network news viewership has fallen to record lows. People no longer watch staples like the World Series en mass, and even Monday Night Football has moved to cable television due to dwindling ratings.

In the 1950s people joined bowling leagues together. Kids played baseball, rode on Schwinn bikes and collected baseball cards. The reason that baseball cards from the 1950s have become so coveted and expensive is that they were shared experiences for the users. Children in the 1950s traded from two sets either Bowman or Topps. The cards were not treated as collectables, but were used in games or treated as props. Many kids put the cards in bicycle spokes or wrote on them when a player moved on to another team.

The baseball card market took a dive in the late 1990s in part because of the diversity of offerings. There were dozens of new cards each season. Premium sets, glossy set and hologram sets were difficult keep straight and the shared experience of having the same card as a friend was lost. The general public seemed to lose a measure of interest in baseball card collecting, but the market lived on for those obsessed with the collectables.

The internet has had a similar effect on entertainment. There are limitless offerings, but few entertainment events transcend and become shared experiences across borders, regions, race and class.

Ever try to start an online tutoring business? Perhaps some individuals have enjoyed success, but many have probably been exposed to a type of internet scam. American teachers will post their ads on popular websites such as Craigslist. Upon receiving an e-mail from a prospective parent seeking a good American tutor fro their son or daughter the teacher will forward his or her resume to the new perspective employer.

The “parent” will then tell a story about their son or daughter moving to the United States to seek an education. The scammer will have specific information about the community and perhaps even the school that their child plans on attending. The more sophisticated scammers might even haggle prices or quiz the potential tutor on the subject manner. There may or may not be an agreement set up, but the arrangement to at least follow up will be established.

The tutor will then receive a check from the parent for several thousand dollars more than any agreed upon rate. The tutor will then be instructed to cash the check as an advance for their services and to send back part of the balance to the student so that he or she can fly to the United States and begin lessons with the tutor.

The check sent to the tutor often come from accounts that have been stolen through identify theft. The scam often works because of the assurance that with a check in hand sending surplus money to an unseen party offers no risk. But once the original check is discovered to be fraudulent, banks will work to recover the funds stolen from one of their account holders. This scam is so common that a single craigslist ad for tutoring services in a major market will likely result in several solicitations for tutoring a child coming to the United States to seek an education. The internet not only brought access to information to living rooms but also new ways to be scammed.

hile the internet has created windfall profits for some people not all of the profits have been earned due to innovative products or services. Internet scams popped up almost as quickly as the first pop-up ad or chat room. One of the most popular scams involved sending money to Nigerian princes so that the victim can take part in a windfall of an oil or diamond fortune.

The scam was not created for the internet and is a variation of the age old confidence scam. The scam went by the name of Spanish Prisoner in earlier versions. In the Spanish Prisoner scam, a falsely imprisoned and wealthy prison needed money to bribe prison guards so that he could escape and gain access to his fortune. Once free the prisoner would return to a life of luxury and send a substantial reward to the person or person who aided him during his time of need. The prisoner, of course did not exist, and the people running the scam were never heard from again after receiving their payment.

The origin of the Nigerian part of the scam can be traced back to the 1980s and the fall of the oil based Nigerian economy. Criminals used the economic uncertainty to con would be investors into sending money. Sending letters out limited the scope of the scam. With e-mail the cost to seek out potential victims was reduced to practically nothing and the scope of the scam greatly expanded. Millions of dollars were wired to criminals in Nigeria or other African countries who promised riches for a relatively small initial investment.

The e-mails are spammed from satellite internet connections throughout African, and the scam continues to enjoy limited success even thought media reports have repeatedly been broadcast exposing the transaction as nothing more than a scam. Greed combined with technology and ignorance has proven to make many American internet users easy marks.

Some of the more popular computer applications and uses, like online casino gambling, online gaming, online businesses, and social media monitoring, quite frequently have the most traffic on their sites. The search engines are also busy with requests for these sites, and the frequent activity makes it very easy for people to find them.

Even with tutorials and guides, however, a person can still become a little overwhelmed at the sheer amount of information that is on the web. The way to manage it and keep yourself from experiencing “information overload” is to stay as focused as possible when you’re online. When you go online for an express purpose, stay focused by having your notes or an outline of the information that you’re looking for.

If you find links as a part of the sites that you visit, limit your clicks to a reasonable number, since this is another item that can get out of control pretty fast. Oftentimes, links can cause you to get distracted once you’re online, and eventually that can make you forget what you were on the Internet to do!

The Internet is a wealth of information. Users often refer solely to the World Wide Web to find the things they need and to do complete and thorough research. The more familiar you become with the web, the easier it will be to navigate.

The internet provides people with the means to hunt out facts on almost every story or tall tale. Yet rather than fact check or verify stories many people prefer to simply push send and forward on lies so that a story that is a clear fabrication lives on for many years. Mass forwarded e-mails seem to be particularly ugly when paired with politics.

Prior to the 2008 Presidential elections President Barrack Obama was a regular target of e-mails that questioned his religion and his national origin. The so-called “birther” movement still refused to die despite confirmation by several news services that Obama’s American birth certificate showing that he was born in Hawaii has been viewed and certified. Obama was the subject of e-mails that claimed he was a Kenyan citizen. Pictures of his visit to his father’s native Kenyan were circulated in e-mails of evidence of Obama’s background as a Muslim.

The attacks on Obama went past merely suggesting that he was not an American citizen. Some e-mails raised the possibility that Obama was a Muslim sleeper agent who was seeking the office of president to unleash his plan for Muslim empowerment. The fact that Obama had a 20-year career in community organization and politics was not enough to overcome the rumors for some people. Inboxes were flooded with poorly conceived conspiracies that painted Obama as an agent of Osama Bin Laden. It did not matter that Obama was the editor-in-chief of the Harvard Law Review, and that he had previously been criticized for being a member of a Christian church tat some critics claimed was too radical.

The internet provided powerful access to information, but one of the drawbacks of this access is that anyone can put information online. There was no vetting with the Obama e-mails, which meant that fabrications were passed along as fact to anyone unwilling to find out if they were true.

Now that Facebook has bypassed eBay to become the third most profitable online business, one should not be surprised to find lots of websites trying to cash in on the popular social network’s name.

One site, Lamebook, recently received threats from Facebook demanding that the company cease using its “book” name. Even more problematic, though, is that Lamebook consists almost exclusively of images from Facebook. Lamebook’s personnel scour Facebook every day to find the most ridiculous, embarrassing and otherwise humorous status updates. In the process of attracting a devoted following, they also attracted the ire of Facebook.

This is not the first time that Facebook has threatened legal action against websites that used similar names. Most of those sites have been intimidated into changing their names. Placebook, for instance, changed its name to TipTrace after Facebook’s lawyers threatened legal action. Facebook even took one website, Teachbook, to court. Lamebook, however, has not been intimidated into making any changes. It doesn’t really have a choice. Its success solely depends on parodying Facebook. Without the name, the joke wouldn’t be nearly as funny. Facebook has filed suit in California.

Lamebook, which is based in Austin, has filed a complaint against Facebook in Texas, saying that the First Amendment protects their right to use the name. To some, this must seem like a petty dispute. The Internet, after all, has made it possible for people to download software illegally, potentially stealing millions of dollars from the industry. It might seem like a silly fight, but Facebook takes it very seriously.

Unfortunately, it seems that a lawsuit is coming for Lamebook. The humorous site certainly doesn’t have as much money as Facebook. Depending on which judge gets the case, though, they could still have a good chance retaining the name.

What makes people equal in a society? The Constitution supposedly grants equality to all, even though when it was framed many men were held in bondage. Another half of society had no voting right and were essentially the property of their husbands. The Constitution has been amended since, and society has become more equal.

Even though the improvement has allowed a leveling of the playing field it is difficult to say that even with all the advances in modern industrialized society that people enjoy a great deal of equality. While the law might grant people rights, fighting for those rights requires the ability to pay for proper legal representation.

The internet has provided a powerful leveling effect and given voice to the voiceless. Minority groups and niche societies have had the opportunity to press their agendas and forums to meets. While the access of information on the internet has made society more open, the notion that people enjoy greater freedom is not supported by statistics. American workers work longer hours for less pay. Worker productivity has been on the rise while real wages have decreased.

True equality seems to be economic equality. Without means workers can be forces to perform undesirable tasks to keep their families feed and to remain in their homes. Money offers true freedom for people. The ability to pay for goods and services offers individuals the freedom to pick which tasks they want to perform and where they want to live.

While the internet has been important in pushing for rights and recognition for minority groups, the online community has not done much to lessen the shocking wealth gap been the richest individuals and the rest of the population. The access to other markets might have even widened the gap as workers must now compete against each other from across the world. If economic equality equals equality then the internet has made very little change in wealth distribution.

When Boise State beat Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl college football got a sample of the type of upset and game that matched the hype of any given Saturday crowd. Boise State went toe-to-toe and triumphed against one of the great traditional powers in college football. The Broncos won on a stunning Statue of Liberty trick play on a two-point conversion in overtime.

While the moment put Boise State on the map and gave football fans one of the most exciting games in history many announcers used the game as the centerpiece of an argument for a playoff system. Announcers during the game complained that the Broncos athletes had been robbed of a chance to play for the National Championship. Computer systems were robbing the student athletes of the opportunity to decide the games on the field. College football lacked a “true champion”.

Despite all the cries in anger, there is not perfect way to determine a football national champion. The NCAA Basketball Tournament is not a comparable model to football. The sports are too different to compare. Basketball tournaments are far easy to set up and complete than the logistics required to arrange a football playoff.

Logistical problems aside, the argument that a playoff would determine the “true” champion falls short when examining that each conference and team faces such different circumstances that it is a vast assumption that a playoff would put all questions to rest. A playoff often determines which team is playing the best at the time much like the bowl season already does.

There is no perfect way to determine a national champion in college football. Rather than fretting over which team has been wronged or complain about the current system, fans might be best served by enjoying the action on the field. College football is entertainment, not science, and debating which team is the best is part of the theatre.

The Fox Show Glee has been a surprising success that has become culturally significant. Glee characters have appeared on the Simpsons and have been featured on magazine covers. While success might be cherished by the cast and crew a GQ photo shoot earned the show the ire of fans who considered the pictures to be too risqué.

One group, the Parent Television Counsel went as far as declaring that the pictures bordered on child pornography. Their stance was that since the characters on the show were high school students the actor and actresses should not be sexualized in pictures. The photos showed to female characters in revealing outfits that had school girl and cheerleader motifs.

While the photo shoot might not have been for all audiences, GQ is aimed at an adult audience. While the characters on the show might be portrayed at high school students the actors are all in their 20s. It seems like high standards for actors to remain in character throughout the rest of their.

While Glee might appears to be aimed for all audiences due to its show tune take on popular music, the show deals with serious issues such as teenage pregnancy and gay bashing. Accusing the cast of taking part in child pornography and lashing out seems like outdated griping in the era of the internet.

Pornography is easily accessible via a search.  Curious children of any age can not only access porn but also come into contact with sexual predators online in a manner of a few minutes. The internet has changed the manner in which parents can “protect” their children from material that may be considered violent or sexual. Of all the negative influences readily available to children from the laptop in their living room, worrying about exposure to sexy photos in a magazine seems absurd. Child pornography is a serious problem online, not in the perception of fans of a musical show.

As time has allowed for brilliant minds to apply their creativity to the evolution of operating systems, one thing has digressed: games.  In the 1980′s a computer’s operating system sometimes came with dozens of games like Frogger, Pac Man, Captain Comic, Gorilla, and more.  Then, you had the 1990′s when games like Chip’s Challenge, Jezz Ball and others were played for hours.
While the computers held less memory than a modern iPod, there was always room for entertaining games to keep you up at all hours of the night.

Computer makers are all business now, which you can’t really blame them.  Sure, you can get games but be ready to give your credit card number first.  Games have vastly improved in their graphics, functions, and complexity, bringing the evolution of RPG, first person shooter games like Doom or Medal of Honor, and games like Guitar Hero 3.  These games obviously had years of research and development which justifies paying a price.  But it’s hard to get a computer that has more than chess or solitaire these days.  The gaming market is in the billions of dollars but maybe computer manufacturers should consider adding a few more games to the standard works that come with the current operating systems.

Today, the average price of a computer game is around $20 which gets expensive after you buy a few.  Fortunately, in the billion dollar gaming market some game manufacturers have posted simple games to download for free online.  Maybe traditionalists feel like the old-school games were better and haven’t eased into the transition of playing these newer, yet free games.  They argue that better games came with the operating system and that the old model should return.  The newer generation contends that the new games are better equipped and can be chosen at will.

The traditionalists are still asking, what happened to the games?

This is the first part of a series comparing the Windows 7 versus the OS X Snow Leopard operating systems.  In this post, the internet browsers by each competitor will be compared.

Currently, there are many internet browsers: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer, and Safari.  The latter two will be focused on.  Microsoft Windows 7 comes with Internet Explorer 8 which currently has estimates around 55 percent market share; Mac’s Safari 5 has an estimated 5 percent.  Internet Explorer has been the most dominant browser in the market since 1999 and Safari has very slowly gained market share since Apple developed the browser for their operating system.  While Apple has grown in popularity over the past few years it still has a lot of ground to cover before reaching Windows 7.

Perhaps you have multiple tabs open on your browser right now.  If you are in Internet Explorer 8 and your page crashes, you will not need to exit out of all of your tabs, thereby losing precious locations for sites you are visiting.  Instead, only that tab will be affected, providing an automatic crash tab recovery.  Safari does not have this feature.

Internet Explorer 8 has an activity feature where you can easily add a page and post it to your Facebook or Digg account.  Safari  includes a function on any specific page you visit where you can search for a specific word and it will darken the page and highlight what you are looking for.  Nothing groundbreaking but kind of cool.

Safari, similar to most Apple products, is simple and user-friendly.  It has been developed to be used on Windows for the many web-based apps that are best suited for Safari.  It is clean and fast and for those reasons it is adequate, but not content-rich.  Internet Explorer has more advanced features that are more suited for the intermediate and advanced online users.

The Windows 7 vs. OS X Snow Leopard (or just Leopard) comparison will continue.  While these operating systems were both released one year ago they are still very relevant in the minds of computer users, which is just about anyone in civilized countries.  One obvious reason to purchase is the price.

Since the majority of computers come with either the Leopard or Windows 7 operating system already, for the most part, price isn’t an issue.  But for those that already have Vista, XP, or Apple’s Tiger, upgrading to the newer operating system brings the price point into play.

Those who decide on the Mac will be happy to know that upgrading to Leopard is significantly cheaper than Windows 7, bringing it to around $29.  Windows 7, depending on which version you choose, is upwards of $144 on Amazon (for the full version).  The Home Premium 64 comes at around $75, depending on who’s selling it.  The Leopard Operating System all comes in one versatile package.  When it comes to price Leopard wins this one hands down and makes choosing it over Windows the more enticing operating system for your computer.

The second thing to discuss is the installation process.  Leopard is a quick install with an easy walk-through process.  The computer recognizes it easily and it is nice and clean.  Windows 7 also installs easily although it does require typing in one of those long, annoying alphanumeric codes and sometimes it has a hard time recognizing video cards and other devices.  It tends to be a quick fix and overall it installs well, although it takes a little bit more time to install because you have to choose which upgrade you would like and whether you want a clean or upgrade install.  Overall, Leopard has the slight edge on installation.

So, in price and installation Leopard comes out on top.

Again, the Windows 7 and Leopard operating systems will be examined.  While these systems reached their first birthday this month they are here to stay for a while and are important to analyze if one wants to purchase a new computer or upgrade their operating system.

Which OS Has Greater Battery Conservation?
While the notebook’s battery dictates the battery life, the operating system plays a role in how long it lasts.   Windows 7 preserves notebook battery life by 11 percent or more compared to its Vista predecessor.  Apple notebooks’ battery life conservation were not exactly touted when the Leopard OS came out so it is likely there wasn’t much of a change in the positive direction.  Windows won in the battery improvement by OS category.

Boot Time: Which Is The Preferable Option?
From sleep mode Windows 7 takes six seconds longer so not a big difference.  Boot time was a consistent stink for Windows 7.  Compare about 1 minute to about 45 seconds for the Leopard.  It’s hard not to get frustrated about boot time, whether it be six seconds or one minute, but Leopard eases the frustration just enough not to go a little crazy.

System Performance Is What Counts
When it comes to computer usage it is pivotal to have an operating system that performs its tasks efficiently and consistently over a longer-term basis.  The comparison between Windows 7 and Leopard in the system performance is one of the most intriguing.  Testing found that Leopard has superior CPU and RAM performance when compared to Windows.  The system copies mixed media of about 21 MBps on Leopard compared to 18 MBps on Windows.

When it comes to battery conservation Windows came out as most improved.  Leopard provides faster boot time and recovery from sleep mode.  And the system performance champion was the Leopard, our winner of 2 out 3 comparisons in this post.

The comparison between the two premier operating systems continues.  What will be your winner after the system configuration and launching applications are analyzed?  So far, they have both held up well in various categories.  Windows 7 has received many more favorable reviews than its predecessor Vista.  And Leopard continues to demonstrate its unique capabilities thought up by the creative Mac team.

Leopard System Configuration
Operating systems don’t come perfectly tailored to your specific aesthetic or logic needs.  Fortunately, they do allow some tweaking depending on the OS.  Leopard’s straight-forward and simple system configuration make it easy to use.  They are separated into five categories: Internet & Wireless, Hardware, Personal, System, and other.

Windows 7 System Configuration
Windows 7 is much more complex, containing seven main categories and many more subcategories.  The interface is different among categories and brings with it a long and difficult learning experience.  The complexity of the system configuration for Windows 7 brings with it a robust amount of features that Leopard does not offer.  So, whether you are not as versed with operating systems and want something simpler, Leopard would be a better fit.  If you are looking for more advanced configuration then Windows 7 will likely be the right choice.

Launching Applications
One primary feature to operating systems is the running of applications and switching between tasks.  Windows 7 and Leopard both underwent changes to make the process easier.  They both allow the user to view thumbnails of all tabs that are open.  Once again, the Leopard wins in the aesthetic test. Windows 7, however, shows a stack of icons to see where Leopard falls short and does not have this feature.  If a user has multiple browser tabs open and tries to view them all in the Leopard Dock they can only view one tab, having no idea what the other tabs are.  In this case, Windows 7 improved and beats Leopard in launching applications.

Yet again, the two operating systems are put in a side-by-side comparison.  Windows 7 and Apple’s Snow Leopard are like apples and oranges in some respects; but at the same time, there is much that can be analyzed accurately relative to the other.  While Macs have been known for their originality, Windows is a familiar sight and safe harbor for many.  While Windows is a boring name it contains original and interesting concepts programmed into the operating system.  And with Snow Leopard’s off-the-wall yet spunky name you will find features that put you at ease while you navigate your computer.  This time, a comparison will be made solely of each operating system’s hardware configuration.

Hardware Configuration
How much good does an operating system do if it is incompatible with the hardware it mingles with?  Well, not much at all.  So, how well does Snow Leopard work with Macs, and how well does Windows 7 work for PC’s?  Snow Leopard was made to work on Intel-based hardware and not on the older PowerPC hardware.  Apple switched to this hardware in 2006.  Any person with a Mac from 2006 and earlier most likely will not be able to use Snow Leopard.  But anything bought within the last three years should be a safe bet that Snow Leopard will work.  Windows 7 is less clear-cut.  Windows 7 will run on any machine that runs Windows Vista and many of the machines that run XP to make things simple.  It requires 2GB of ram for the 64-bit version and 1GB for the 32-bit version.  Snow Leopard requires 1 GB of ram.  Windows 7 is compatible with older hardware than Snow Leopard does even though it is a bit more complicated.  Because Windows 7 works with a wider variety of old hardware it is the winner with hardware configuration compatibility.

Finally, the Windows 7 and OS X Snow Leopard will be broken down!  Hopefully, you have learned some of the basic strengths and weaknesses of each operating system.  Surprisingly, they are fairly close overall in the categories that have been examined.  It has been interesting to see the improvements that have been made since the last OS that Microsoft and Apple have put forth.  Nothing has been drastically altered but generally minor adjustments have been made to make the OS easier to use, more compatible, and more powerful.  It is exciting to see the evolution each has undergone from the boring, primitive OS that were back in the nineties.  The operating systems will be judged on their popularity in the business world and ease of use and beauty.

Linux – Like Mac OS X the Linux operating system and the programs for it are usually free. The programs are easier to customize for personal use and they are not usually attacked by viruses. One drawback to using Linux is that one must be a more advanced computer user to take advantage of these features. Like choosing cell phone plans, deciding which operating system is right for you is a matter of personal choice.
